Angry at GST but blaming me, says restaurant owner

LadyfingerGEORGE TOWN: A nasi kandar restaurant owner in Bukit Jambul, hauled up twice for charging high prices, has defended the move by citing customers’ anger over the Goods and Services Tax (GST) as the main reason behind their complaints, the Malay Mail reported.

Burhan Muhamad, the owner of Kayu Nasi Kandar Restaurant, said the complaints of overcharging have come about because customers who were angry over the GST were directing their anger at his restaurant instead.

Enforcement officers from the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry visited the restaurant for the second time yesterday after a customer complained about a RM20 bill for a dish of five ladies fingers.

Last week an angry customer complained that Kayu had charged him RM2.50 for a roti telur.

Explaining the first case to enforcement officers, Burhan admitted that his cashier had erroneously billed the customer for ladies fingers. A formal apology has since been made as well as an offer for a refund.

However Burhan maintained that the price for the roti telur was fair. He explained, "Our roti telur price is reasonable as it is of high quality and customers can enjoy their food in the comfortable setting of our restaurant."

While enforcement officers have noted Burhan's explanations, they issued him all the same with a notice demanding an explanation for the price hikes within three days.
